But why is this so hard for Americans to grasp? Peter Beinart on our country\u2019s long track record of conflating religion and race.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The day after last week\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_Marathon_bombings\" target=\"_blank\">attack in Boston<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidsirota.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Sirota<\/a> wrote a column for <em>Salon<\/em> entitled \u201cLet\u2019s Hope the Boston Marathon Bomber Is a White American,\u201d arguing that this would limit the resulting crackdown on civil liberties. At first, conservatives were appalled. Then, when police fingered the Tsarnaev brothers, they were triumphant. \u201cSorry, David Sirota, Looks Like Boston Bombing Suspects Not White Americans,\u201d snickered a headline in <em>Newsbusters<\/em>. \u201cDespite the most fervent hopes of some writers over at <em>Salon.com<\/em>,\u201d added a blogger at Commentary, \u201cthe perpetrators of the Boston Marathon bombing are not \u2018white Americans\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the bombers were white Americans.<\/strong> The Tsarnaev brothers had lived in the United States for more than a decade. Dzhokhar was a U.S. citizen. Tamerlan was a legal permanent resident in the process of applying for citizenship. And as countless commentators have noted, the Tsarnaevs hail from the Caucasus, and are therefore, literally, \u201cCaucasian.\u201d You can\u2019t get whiter than that.<\/p>\n<p>So why did conservatives mock Sirota for being wrong? Because in public conversation in America today, \u201cIslam\u201d is a racial term. Being Muslim doesn\u2019t just mean not being Christian or Jewish.
