She was acquitted.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leo_Branton_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\">Leo Branton Jr.<\/a>, a California lawyer whose moving closing argument in a racially and politically charged murder trial in 1972 helped persuade an all-white jury to acquit a black communist, the activist and academic <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Angela_Davis\" target=\"_blank\">Angela Davis<\/a>, died on April 19 in Los Angeles. He was 91.<\/p>\n<p>His death was confirmed by Howard Moore Jr., another lawyer who represented Ms. Davis.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Branton, a black veteran of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\" target=\"_blank\">World War II<\/a> who served in a segregated Army unit, represented prominent black performers, including <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nat_King_Cole\" target=\"_blank\">Nat King Cole<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorothy_Dandridge\" target=\"_blank\">Dorothy Dandridge<\/a>, argued cases on behalf of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Panther_Party\" target=\"_blank\">Black Panthers<\/a> and the Communist Party, and filed numerous cases alleging police abuse.
