But Australia was not an isolated continent, and long before white settlement, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Makassar\" target=\"_blank\">Macassan<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trepanging\" target=\"_blank\">trepangers<\/a> had made contact with Aboriginal people along the Northern Coastline, weaving trading networks that extended from China to the Kimberley and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Torres_Strait\" target=\"_blank\">Torres Strait<\/a>. It was this Asian\u2013Aboriginal link that gave rise to the northern pearling industry, a subsequent driver of regional economic development.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mixed Relations<\/em> explores successive waves of contact in northern Australia and the impact of circumstances\u2014political, legal and economic\u2014on members of the polyethnic communities.
