Turner<\/a><\/strong>, Associate Director at the Center for National Security Law<br \/>\n<em>University of Virginia School of Law<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cap-press.com\/isbn\/9780890890851\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cap-press.com\/covers\/1179.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2000, the newly formed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sally_Hemings#Thomas_Jefferson_Foundation_report\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society<\/a> asked a group of more than a dozen senior scholars from across the country to carefully examine all of the evidence for and against the allegations that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Jefferson\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Jefferson<\/a> fathered one or more children by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sally_Hemmings\" target=\"_blank\">Sally Hemings<\/a>, one of his slaves, and to issue a public report. In April 2001, after a year of study, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sally_Hemings#Scholars_Commission_report\" target=\"_blank\">Scholars Commission<\/a> issued the most detailed report to date on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>With but a single mild dissent, the views of the distinguished panel ranged from &#8220;serious skepticism&#8221; to a conviction that the allegation was &#8220;almost certainly false.&#8221; This volume, edited by Scholars Commission Chairman Robert F. Turner, includes the &#8220;Final Report&#8221;\u2014essentially a summary of arguments and conclusions\u2014as it was released to the press on April 12, 2001.
