Raised in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Williamsburg,_Brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\">Williamsburg<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crown_Heights,_Brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\">Crown Heights<\/a> by her <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ashkenazi_Jews\" target=\"_blank\">Ashkenazi Jewish<\/a> dad (who freelances for <em>The Jewish Week<\/em>) and Jamaican mom, Weichselbaum, a Park East Day School grad (she formally converted to Judaism at age 7), covers Brooklyn for the <em>Daily News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Her coverage \u2014 \u201cpiercing, respectful, accurate and entertaining reporting of the multicultural borough, in particular its Orthodox Jews and Jews of color\u201d \u2014 earned her the 2013 \u201cMedia Award\u201d from Be\u2019chol Lashon, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that celebrates and promotes cultural\/racial diversity and inclusivity in American Jewish life.<\/p>\n<p>Weichselbaum \u2014 who reports on everything from crime to the city\u2019s bike-share program (she\u2019s an avid cyclist who often commutes to interviews on her two-wheeler) \u2014 recently met with <em>The Jewish Week<\/em> at a caf\u00e9 near her apartment. The following is a condensed and edited version of the conversation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: So what was it like growing up in an interracial and Orthodox family?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: My parents raised me Jewish \u2014 we never talked about race. They said, \u201cYou\u2019re biracial.\u201d I grew up with other kids who were like that too. Park East had other biracial Jews and Jews from around the world, so it wasn\u2019t weird to be brown there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, do you identify as black?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m proudly biracial. I\u2019m very adamant about this. I don\u2019t understand why people pick one. I\u2019m Jamaican and Jewish. I have friends who are biracial and say they\u2019re black Jews or Latino Jews. I\u2019m like, \u201cYou\u2019re mom\u2019s white, knock it off.\u201d &#8230; I like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shlomo_Carlebach_(musician)\" target=\"_blank\">[Shlomo] Carlebach<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Notorious_B.I.G.\" target=\"_blank\">Biggie Smalls<\/a>.
