{"id":32657,"date":"2013-08-02T02:04:56","date_gmt":"2013-08-02T02:04:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=32657"},"modified":"2015-09-27T18:02:10","modified_gmt":"2015-09-27T18:02:10","slug":"study-explores-race-differences-of-lung-cancer-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=32657","title":{"rendered":"Study explores race differences of lung cancer risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/2013\/08\/study-explores-race-differences-of-lung-cancer-risk\" target=\"_blank\">Study explores race differences of lung cancer risk<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/vumc-reporter\" target=\"_blank\">Vanderbilt University Medical Center Reporter<\/a><br \/>\n2013-08-01<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"mailto:mmartinez@wingluke.org\" target=\"_blank\">Mimi Eckhard<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vanderbilt research scientist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mc.vanderbilt.edu\/root\/vumc.php?site=thoracic&amp;doc=30754\" target=\"_blank\">Melinda Aldrich, Ph.D., MPH<\/a>, has been awarded a National Institutes of Health Academic Career Award to investigate some of the genetic secrets behind a greater risk of lung cancer among African-Americans compared with other racial and ethnic groups.<\/p>\n<p>Aldrich, assistant professor of Thoracic Surgery and Epidemiology, will study the genetic ancestry of African-Americans to identify the genetic and environmental risk factors associated with a higher incidence of lung cancer in this population.<\/p>\n<p>To date, this represents the largest study of African-Americans with lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Though smoking is certainly a well-documented risk factor for lung cancer, it does not explain the racial disparity in lung cancer risk.
