When he learned that one of his most esteemed professors, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Agassiz\" target=\"_blank\">Louis Agassiz<\/a>, then director of the recently established <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Museum_of_Comparative_Zoology\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of Comparative Zoology<\/a>, was preparing a research expedition to Brazil, James offered his services as a voluntary collector. Over the course of a year, James kept a diary, wrote letters to his family, and sketched the plants, animals, <strong>and people he observed<\/strong>. During this journey, James spent time primarily in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rio_de_Janeiro\" target=\"_blank\">Rio de Janeiro<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bel%C3%A9m\" target=\"_blank\">Bel\u00e9m<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manaus\" target=\"_blank\">Manaus<\/a>, and along the rivers and tributaries of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amazon_Basin\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon Basin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This volume is a critical, bilingual (English-Portuguese) edition of William James\u2019s diaries and letters and also includes reproductions of his drawings.
