{"id":33182,"date":"2013-08-26T03:27:41","date_gmt":"2013-08-26T03:27:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=33182"},"modified":"2013-08-26T03:27:41","modified_gmt":"2013-08-26T03:27:41","slug":"despite-%e2%80%98enormous-strides%e2%80%99-minorities-still-face-barriers-president-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=33182","title":{"rendered":"Despite \u2018Enormous Strides,\u2019 Minorities Still Face Barriers, President Says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/08\/24\/us\/politics\/despite-strides-minorities-still-face-barriers-obama-says.html\" target=\"_blank\">Despite \u2018Enormous Strides,\u2019 Minorities Still Face Barriers, President Says<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a><br \/>\n2013-08-23<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Hurdle<\/strong> and <strong>Peter Baker<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scranton,_Pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\">SCRANTON, Pa.<\/a> \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">President Obama<\/a> declared on Friday that the United States had made \u201cenormous strides\u201d in race relations since the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/March_on_Washington_for_Jobs_and_Freedom\" target=\"_blank\">March on Washington<\/a> 50 years ago, but said \u201cinstitutional barriers\u201d for African-Americans and other minorities still existed and must be overcome.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a town hall-style meeting at Binghamton University in New York, Mr. Obama said that even though there was less overt discrimination in modern society, the legacy of slavery and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=4781\" target=\"_self\">Jim Crow<\/a> continued to afflict many in America. He said the economic troubles of recent years had exacerbated divisions across racial and class lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty years after the March on Washington and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I_Have_a_Dream\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018I Have a Dream\u2019 speech<\/a>, obviously we\u2019ve made enormous strides,\u201d Mr. Obama said in response to a question from a professor of African-American studies. \u201c<strong>I\u2019m a testament to it.<\/strong> You\u2019re a testament to it.\u201d He added that \u201cwe know that some discrimination still exists, although nothing like what existed 50 years ago.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;As the nation\u2019s first black president, Mr. Obama occupies a singular place in this anniversary moment, the culmination of a half-century of struggle and a symbol to people around the world about the progress in America. And yet he has tried to rebut arguments that his own success meant that the country had graduated beyond race.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Obama plans to host a reception at the White House on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the march, and then on Wednesday he will speak from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lincoln_Memorial\" target=\"_blank\">Lincoln Memorial<\/a>, as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. King<\/a> did a half-century ago.
