Is Blackness a matter of biology or consciousness? What determines who is Black and who is not? A new book by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yabablay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Yaba Blay<\/a>, an assistant professor and co-director of the Africana Studies program in Drexel University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drexel.edu\/coas\" target=\"_blank\">College of Arts and Sciences<\/a>, seeks to challenge narrow perceptions of what Blackness is and what it looks like.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The book, entitled<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=32590\" target=\"_blank\">(<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1<\/span>)ne Drop: Shifting the Lens on Race<\/a>, <\/em>combines candid narratives and photos of 60 contributors from 25 different countries, providing a living testimony to the diversity of Blackness. It is intended to spark dialogue about the intricacies and nuances of racial identity and the influence of skin color politics.<\/p>\n<p>The book is part of Blay\u2019s larger, multi-platform project called <a href=\"http:\/\/1nedrop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>(<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1<\/span>)ne Drop<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>\u2013 a reference to the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=3208\" target=\"_blank\">one-drop rule<\/a>\u201d from the early 1900s that held that anyone with 1\/32 of \u201cAfrican Black blood\u201d was Black.<\/p>\n<p>The project, which includes an online and traveling exhibition, ultimately seeks to raise social awareness and inspire community conversation about the complexities of Blackness as both an identity and a lived reality.<\/p>\n<p>The project was the inspiration behind \u201cWho is Black in America?\u201d, the fifth installation of <em>CNN<\/em>\u2019s Black in America television documentary series with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/CNN\/anchors_reporters\/obrien.soledad.html?iref=allsearch\" target=\"_blank\">Soledad O\u2019Brien<\/a> in 2012, on which Blay served as a consulting producer&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire press release <a href=\"http:\/\/drexel.edu\/now\/news-media\/releases\/archive\/2013\/July\/Yaba-Blay\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Book by Dr. Yaba Blay Explores Racial Identity and Skin Color Politics Drexel Now Drexel University 2013-07-31 News Media Contact: Alex McKechnie, News Officer, University Communications Phone: 215-895-2705; Mobile: 401-651-7550 What does it mean to be Black?
