Nothing unusual about that, we then politely nodded at each other and a conversation started up.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Me: \u201cEvening\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stranger: \u201cEvening\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201cit\u2019s still quite warm isn\u2019t it\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stranger: \u201cyes it is\u201d; pause; \u201cexcuse me mate, but were do you come from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ipswich\" target=\"_blank\">Ipswich<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stranger: \u201cno, you know, were do you originate from\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201cI originate from Ipswich, my mum is English and my dad is Jamaican\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stranger, sounding surprised: \u201cReally I wouldn\u2019t have thought you were Black, I\u2019d have thought you were Italian or Spanish or something\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me, politely smiles: \u201cyeah, I sometimes get that\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now I wasn\u2019t offended by this and this wasn\u2019t the first time or probably won\u2019t be the last time that I\u2019ll have this conversation. I am a light skinned mixed race person with loose curly hair.
