Ayu Saraswati<\/a><\/strong>, Assistant Professor of Women\u2019s Studies<br \/>\n<em>University of Hawai\u2018i, Manoa<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this talk, Saraswati explores how\u00a0feelings and emotions\u2014Western constructs as well as Indian, Javanese, and Indonesian notions such as\u00a0<em>rasa\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>malu\u2014<\/em>contribute to and are constitutive of transnational and gendered processes of racialization. Employing \u201caffect\u201d theories and feminist cultural studies as a lens through which to analyze a vast range of materials, including the Old Javanese epic poem\u00a0<em>Ramayana,<\/em>\u00a0archival materials, magazine advertisements, commercial products, and numerous interviews with Indonesian women, she argues that it is how emotions come to be attached to certain objects and how they circulate that shape the \u201cemotionscape\u201d of white beauty in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p><em>The seminar series &#8220;Race and Justice in Transnational Perspective&#8221; is organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucmerced.edu\/faculty\/directory\/tanya-golash-boza\" target=\"_blank\">Tanya Golash-Boza<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucmerced.edu\/faculty\/directory\/nigel-hatton\" target=\"_blank\">Nigel Hatton<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucmerced.edu\/faculty\/directory\/david-torres-rouff\" target=\"_blank\">David Torres-Rouff<\/a>.
