Benejah Bushnell, owned Drock for a decade in the mid-1700s in Norwich.<\/p>\n<p>Hayter-Menzies, of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Columbia\" target=\"_blank\">British Columbia<\/a>; Daryl D\u2019Angelo, of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amherst,_New_Hampshire\" target=\"_blank\">Amherst, N.H.<\/a>; and her cousin, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roddy.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Roddy<\/a>, of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spokane,_Washington\" target=\"_blank\">Spokane, Wash.<\/a> \u2014 all of them white \u2014 came to Karen Cook\u2019s U.S. history class at Norwich Free Academy with a story they said had to be told.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have any of the cultural and social legacies of someone who grew up identified as an African-American, and I still had a moment of, \u2018What does this guy want from me,\u2019\u201d D\u2019Angelo said of meeting Hayter-Menzies.<\/p>\n<p>Hayter-Menzies was apprehensive, too&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; Roddy, a retired airline pilot, said he stumbled across his Drock lineage several years ago, while doing genealogical research on his family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI had no idea I had African ancestors until a few years ago,\u201d Roddy said. \u201cNo one in my living family had a clue about that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hayter-Menzies said he\u2019s forged a unique bond with D\u2019Angelo and Roddy, and quickly felt a kinship with them once they finally met.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first reaction was to reach out and hug you,\u201d Hayter-Menzies told D\u2019Angelo. \u201cWe feel like friends already.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.norwichbulletin.com\/news\/x586038473\/Descendants-of-Norwich-slave-owner-meet\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Descendants of Norwich slave, owner meet Norwich Bulletin Norwich, Connecticut 2012-03-29 Adam Benson Norwich, Conn.\u2014When descendants of Norwich slave Guy Drock and the man who owned him met\u00a0 for the first time Thursday, they weren\u2019t sure what would happen.
