{"id":34320,"date":"2013-10-15T02:04:41","date_gmt":"2013-10-15T02:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=34320"},"modified":"2013-10-15T02:04:41","modified_gmt":"2013-10-15T02:04:41","slug":"new-faculty-amy-non-links-health-disparities-to-genetics-and-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=34320","title":{"rendered":"New faculty: Amy Non links health disparities to genetics and environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/2012\/11\/new-faculty-amy-non\/\" target=\"_blank\">New faculty: Amy Non links health disparities to genetics and environment<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/research\/\" target=\"_blank\">Research News @ Vanderbilt<\/a><br \/>\nVanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee<br \/>\n2012-11-30<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"mailto:Liz.entman@vanderbilt.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Liz Entman<\/a><\/strong>, (615) 322-NEWS<\/p>\n<p>For decades, researchers have struggled to identify the root causes behind racial disparities in health. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amynon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amy Non<\/a>, assistant professor of anthropology, takes a multidisciplinary approach.<\/p>\n<p>A molecular anthropologist specializing in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epigenetics\" target=\"_blank\">epigenetics<\/a>, the study of how environment and behavior affect the expression of genes, her work integrates genetics, anthropology and public health.<\/p>\n<p>For example, why are African Americans at greater risk for many chronic diseases? \u201cWe don\u2019t really know what\u2019s causing it\u2014whether it\u2019s their genetic ancestry or whether it\u2019s something about their social or cultural environment,\u201d Non said. <strong>She has found no evidence that African genetic ancestry plays a role and is now trying to identify psychosocial mechanisms\u2014such as stress\u2014that may contribute to these disparities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stress triggers a release of hormones that can lead to inflammation or dysregulation of other biological processes, she said.
