Passing has historically referred to light-skinned African Americans who use their phenotypes to pretend to be white and enjoy the privileges of whiteness. As we will discuss in our seminar, today people pass in a variety of ways, and not just racially. For example, folks regularly pass economically, religiously, and\/or through gender. In discussing contemporary passing, we will begin with President Barack Obama, who some have argued has engaged in a form of passing by having black skin yet \u201cwhite politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We will read primary and secondary material on this literary genre, to determine the tropes, images, themes, and formal elements that comprise \u201cthe passing narrative.\u201d We will also consider the ways in which it has been expanded in this \u201cpost-race\u201d era.<\/p>\n<p>Primary texts will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Weldon_Johnson\">James Weldon Johnson\u2019s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=22648\" target=\"_blank\">The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nella_Larsen\" target=\"_blank\">Nella Larsen\u2019s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=2508\" target=\"_blank\">Passing<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jessie_Redmon_Fauset\" target=\"_blank\">Jessie Fauset\u2019s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=8599\" target=\"_blank\">Plum Bun<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.danzysenna.com\" target=\"_blank\">Danzy Senna\u2019s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=8347\" target=\"_blank\">Caucasia<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_Roth\" target=\"_blank\">Philip Roth\u2019s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=14387\" target=\"_blank\">The Human Stain<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/brookekroeger.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brooke Kroeger\u2019s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=34541\" target=\"_blank\">Passing<\/a><\/em> (collection of contemporary personal narratives)<\/li>\n<li>Short Stories by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chester_Himes\" target=\"_blank\">Chester Himes<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Langston_Hughes\" target=\"_blank\">Langston Hughes<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alice_Dunbar_Nelson\" target=\"_blank\">Alice Moore Dunbar Nelson<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Films will include: \u201cImitation of Life\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imitation_of_Life_(1934_film)\" target=\"_blank\">1934<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imitation_of_Life_(1959_film)\" target=\"_blank\">1959<\/a>) and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Human_Stain_(film)\" target=\"_blank\">The Human Stain<\/a>\u201d (2003).<\/p>\n<p>For more information, click <a href=\"http:\/\/english.rutgers.edu\/undergraduate\/courses\/summer-2013\/seminars\/2645-350445.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>350:445 Revisiting Racial Passing in the 21st Century Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Summer 2013 This is a course on racial passing, which many people wrongly believe is an antiquated phenomenon.
