She\u2019s the chairman of the Prince George\u2019s delegation in the Maryland House of Delegates and a candidate for lieutenant governor of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryland\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the characterization that they are a \u201cpower couple,\u201d however, Glenn Ivey, 52, laughs heartily. Jolene Ivey, also 52, has a similar reaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe find that pretty amusing,\u201d she said with a soft chuckle. \u201cWe\u2019re always buried in laundry and trying to get our children to soccer practice.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jolene_Ivey\" target=\"_blank\">Jolene Ivey<\/a> said her father and stepmother, Gigi Stephenson, nurtured in her a love of community service and advocacy in their Northeast Washington home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were always a good example of how to be good citizens in the world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But running for public office was never her plan, said Jolene Ivey, who earned a bachelor\u2019s in communication at Towson and a master\u2019s in journalism from Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided to run for public office because it is a great vehicle to make things happen for people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annapolis,_Maryland\" target=\"_blank\">Annapolis<\/a>, she has often focused on issues related to women, children and families. If she is elected, her agenda will include working with Gansler to increase the minimum wage, close the achievement gap and improve diversity in government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is exciting to be in a position where I\u2019m going to be able to have a real impact on the direction the state is heading,\u201d she told the <em>AFRO<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jolene Ivey\u2019s racial identification has become something of a subhead in the coverage of the campaign. Though light-skinned enough to be mistaken for White\u2014her birth mother was Caucasian\u2014Jolene Ivey identifies herself as African American.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t affect me inside because I know who I am\u2014I\u2019m Black,\u201d she said. \u201cMy family is Black\u2026and I\u2019m the mother of five Black sons.
