In <em>Clarel<\/em>, Melville points toward <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=450\" target=\"_blank\">miscegenation<\/a> as the solution to problems of ethnic conflict festering since the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War<\/a>, the key to rebuilding a nation torn apart by the economic exploitation and lingering racism of Reconstruction.
