{"id":35195,"date":"2013-12-27T02:24:57","date_gmt":"2013-12-27T02:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=35195"},"modified":"2013-12-27T02:30:59","modified_gmt":"2013-12-27T02:30:59","slug":"looking-for-co-presenters-for-2014-critical-mixed-race-studies-conference-chicago-november","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=35195","title":{"rendered":"Looking for Co-presenters for 2014 Critical Mixed Race Studies Conference (Chicago, November)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Looking for Co-presenters for 2014 Critical Mixed Race Studies Conference (Chicago, November)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2013-12-26<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/potowski.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kim Potowski<\/strong><\/a>, Associate Professor of Linguistics<br \/>\n<em>University of Illinois, Chicago<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I would like to submit a panel for the <a href=\"http:\/\/criticalmixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/cmrs-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">2014 Critical Mixed Race Studies Conference<\/a> about <em>language<\/em> and the ways in which language (dialects, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Code-switching\" target=\"_blank\">code-switching<\/a>, etc.) reflects and enacts the identities of mixed &#8220;race&#8221; and mixed &#8220;ethnicity&#8221; individuals and groups.<\/p>\n<p>By &#8220;mixed ethnicity&#8221; I mean to include, for example, intra-Latino individuals (e.g. &#8220;MexiRicans&#8221;), intra-Asian individuals (e.g. &#8220;Chinese-Korean&#8221;), and other such combinations. Again, the focus of the panel is the ways in which such individuals use and are marked by their linguistic repertoires. Many MexiRicans, for example, speak a variety of Spanish that shows traits from both Mexican and Puerto Rican dialects.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally all presentations will incorporate some mixed race theory, but we can discuss this.<\/p>\n<p>If you know anyone who might like to be considered for this panel, please contact me, Kim Potowski at <a href=\"mailto:kimpotow@uic.edu?subject=CRMS Proposal via MixedRaceStudies.org\" target=\"_blank\">kimpotow@uic.edu<\/a>.
