What does it mean to be black? Is blackness a matter of biology or consciousness? Who and what determine who is black and who is not?<\/p>\n<p>A new book by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yabablay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yaba Blay<\/a>, co-director of the Africana Studies Program at Drexel University, and <a href=\"http:\/\/africana.fiu.edu\/people\/adjunct-faculty\/noelle-theard\/\" target=\"_blank\">Noelle Th\u00e9ard MA\u201910<\/a>, adjunct professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/africana.fiu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">FIU African and African Diaspora Studies Program<\/a>, explores these questions and challenges society\u2019s narrow perception of blackness and what it looks like. Titled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=32590\" target=\"_blank\">(1)ne Drop: Shifting the Lens on Race<\/a><\/em>, its name is a reference to the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=3208\" target=\"_blank\">one-drop rule<\/a>\u201d from the early 20th century, meaning that anyone with 1\/32 of \u201cAfrican black blood\u201d was black.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we live in a \u2018post-racial\u2019 society with a president of mixed-race ancestry and a lot of strides have been made since the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, we still live in a society where issues of race and racial identity are salient,\u201d Th\u00e9ard said. \u201cThere is a tendency for folks to not want to have conversations pertaining to issues of race&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/news.fiu.edu\/2014\/01\/professor-shifts-the-lens-on-race-through-portraiture-new-book\/73041\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor shifts the lens on race through portraiture, new book FIU News Florida International University 2014-01-02 Evelyn Perez What is blackness?
