Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalexchange.org\/tours\/by-country?field_country_nid=133\" target=\"_blank\">Venezuela on a Reality Tour<\/a> to learn more about the struggles, contributions, and successes of Afro-Venezuelans.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>History and Legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under the leadership of the late <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hugo_Ch%C3%A1vez\" target=\"_blank\">President Hugo Ch\u00e1vez<\/a>, Venezuela has made strides toward combating the historical legacy of racism and recognizing the national importance of African heritage, promoting social inclusion and respect for Afro-Venezuelans. Among them is the official celebration of the Month of Africa in May and <a href=\"http:\/\/venezuela-us.org\/2013\/05\/10\/afro-descendent-month-kicks-off-in-venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\">Day of Afro-Venezuelans<\/a> on May 10.<\/p>\n<p>Although Abolition occurred in 1854, freedom did not bring equality. Venezuela, like many other Latin American countries, used the idea of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mestizo\" target=\"_blank\">mestizo<\/a> born of European, Indigenous, and African blood, to uphold a myth of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=22166\" target=\"_blank\">racial democracy<\/a> that denied rampant discrimination on the basis of skin color and African identity on paper.\u00a0 In reality African cultural traditions remained marginalized and European traditions were promoted.
