{"id":35628,"date":"2014-01-26T10:11:09","date_gmt":"2014-01-26T10:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=35628"},"modified":"2014-01-26T10:11:09","modified_gmt":"2014-01-26T10:11:09","slug":"getting-race-y-in-the-pmac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=35628","title":{"rendered":"Getting Race-y in the PMAC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/thenews.choate.edu\/article\/getting-race-y-pmac\" target=\"_blank\">Getting Race-y in the PMAC<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thenews.choate.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">The News: The official student newspaper of Choate Rosemary Hall<\/a><br \/>\nWallingford, Connecticut<br \/>\nSaturday, 2014-01-25<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexandra Brunjes \u201916<\/strong>, News Staff Reporter<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does our belief in \u2018race\u2019 affect our most intimate relationships?\u201d This is the question that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onedropoflove.org\/a-little-more-about-fanshen\/\">Ms. Fanshen Cox DiGiovanni<\/a> sought to answer during her one-woman performance, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.onedropoflove.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">One Drop of Love<\/a><\/em>, last Friday night, January 17th, on the Paul Mellon Arts Center [(PMAC)] mainstage, employing her relationship with her father as the primary example.<\/p>\n<p>Using a collection of images and voice recordings and the astonishing ability to seamlessly shift personas in order to represent members of her family, Ms. DiGiovanni told the story of her experience with race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms. DiGiovanni originally meant for <em>One Drop of Love<\/em> to be a documentary for her Masters of Fine Arts thesis at California State University. \u201cI always knew I wanted to look at race,\u201d she stated. \u201cI wanted to figure out why race was so important in my family, and why it was getting in the way of my relationship with my dad. It took me a long time to realize that the entire reason for my show was to have that final confrontation with my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celebrity <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ben_Affleck\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Affleck<\/a>, a childhood friend, attended Ms. DiGiovanni\u2019s first show. He then consulted with co-producers from <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Argo_(2012_film)\" target=\"_blank\">Argo<\/a><\/em> and friend <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matt_Damon\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Damon<\/a>. They ultimately decided to produce her show. She said about this development, \u201c[The show] gained this new trajectory that I never had imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the largest crowd I have ever performed for, as well as the youngest,\u201d Ms. DiGiovanni said of her Choate performance. \u201cAt the end, the response was beautiful. I\u2019m so glad that it can have an impact on people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe performance was hands-down the best Choate performance I have ever seen.
