{"id":35806,"date":"2014-02-12T08:30:11","date_gmt":"2014-02-12T08:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=35806"},"modified":"2014-02-12T08:36:29","modified_gmt":"2014-02-12T08:36:29","slug":"meaning-of-mixed-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=35806","title":{"rendered":"Meaning of mixed race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/2014\/02\/meaning-of-mixed-race\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Meaning of mixed race<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/new\" target=\"_blank\">Macalester College News<\/a><br \/>\nSaint Paul, Minnesota<br \/>\n2013-02-07<\/p>\n<p>Americans are increasingly thinking about their racial identities, says American studies professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/academics\/americanstudies\/facultystaff\/janerhodes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Rhodes<\/a>, with the whole question of mixed race identities getting more attention. \u201cAcademia is just starting to catch up with that conversation,\u201d she says, which is one reason why her department is devoting its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=35609\" target=\"_blank\">15th annual conference to the topic February 27 and 28<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Macalester senior Hannah Johnson (Olympia, Wash.) is equally fascinated by the subject, which led her to write her sociology capstone paper about mixed race and multiracial identities. \u201cWe talk a lot at Mac about how we construct gender,\u201d says Johnson, \u201cbut I wanted to explore how we construct race. Nobody really knows what mixed race is right now. It\u2019s a great place to be in American history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson interviewed 11 people in depth on the topic, and found that her fellow students and others \u201creally want to talk about the issue\u2014I\u2019m still hearing from people excited to talk about mixed race,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>She found that mixed race people have two distinct ways of thinking about their identity: as a combination of two or more racial groups (such as half Chinese, half African American) or as its own separate category.
