Want a degree in Asian American Studies? Sure. How about African American, Native or American Indian, Latin American, Mexican American or Chicano studies? Absolutely. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Search\" target=\"_blank\">Google [Search]<\/a>\u00a0all of these and you\u2019ll find brilliant choices to be credentialed in these heritage experiences at very fine colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you ID as mixed-race multicultural across any of these racial lines? Is there a degree for that?<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?page_id=5246#5\" target=\"_blank\">Not that I\u2019m aware of<\/a>,\u201d writes Steven F. Riley of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.MixedRaceStudies.org\" target=\"_blank\">MixedRaceStudies.org<\/a> (46), \u201cThe vast majority of courses on mixed-race studies are within the disciplines of Sociology, Psychology, History and Literature, etc.\u201d Despite the fact that the crop of students moving through college today is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/30\/us\/30mixed.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">largest group of self-identified mixed-race people<\/a> ever to come of age in the U.S., \u201cIn traditional Ethnic Studies,\u201d writes <a href=\"http:\/\/crg.berkeley.edu\/content\/crossing-lines-cfp\" target=\"_blank\">University of California, Berkeley: Center for Race and Gender<\/a>, \u201cMixed race scholarship has often been marginalized, misappropriated, tokenized or simply left out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed it has only been in recent history that an arena for multi-race discourse has even forcibly begun construction mostly due to multiracials themselves. In the US this is because we have (a) not only a history of denying mixed race which persists but (b) a habit of continuing to operate under the assumption that race can be easily identified and filed away. Anyone who can\u2019t be instantly categorized by visual scanning either gets shoved into something that kinda sorta fits, shows up as a mere blip on the cognitive-radar screen or flies under it completely. Case in point, whether by choice or lack of choice, some of the more visible mixed-race Asian scholars\/authors right now are embedded in other departments at their campuses: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurakina.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Kina<\/a> (Art, Media, &amp; Design, DePaul University), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.com.washington.edu\/nishime\/\" target=\"_blank\">Leilani Nishime<\/a> (Dept of Communication, University of Washington), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.murphyshigematsu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Shigematsu-Murphy<\/a> (Asian American Studies, Stanford University), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuim.ie\/people\/rebecca-king-oriain\" target=\"_blank\">Rebecca Chiyoko King-O\u2019Riain<\/a> (Sociology, University of Ireland)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.racismreview.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/08\/college-learning-mixed-race-id\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why isn\u2019t College for Learning About Mixed-Race Identities?
