Or so the university&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/yalecollege.yale.edu\/content\/edward-bouchet-undergraduate-fellowship-program\" target=\"_blank\">histories<\/a> tell us\u2014and we&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.yalealumnimagazine.com\/issues\/2006_01\/old_yale.html\" target=\"_blank\">reported it ourselves<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yalealumnimagazine.com\/articles\/2139\" target=\"_blank\">more than once<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet that very year, a Quaker publication from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philadelphia\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=jD0rAAAAYAAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q=yale&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">recognized<\/a>\u00a0an earlier pioneer:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The first colored graduate of the Academical Department of Yale,&#8221; it says, &#8220;was Richard Henry Green, in 1857.&#8221; At least two other newspapers published similar items around the same time in 1874.<\/p>\n<p>Green, a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Haven,_Connecticut\" target=\"_blank\">New Haven<\/a> native who died in 1877 at age 43, seems to have been lost from Yale history. Now he has been found again, thanks to research by an archivist at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swanngalleries.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Swann Auction Galleries<\/a> in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fascinating story,&#8221; the archivist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swanngalleries.com\/specialists\/?userid=28\" target=\"_blank\">Rick Stattler<\/a>, says in a phone interview. &#8220;I sort of stumbled across it by accident&#8221; while researching Green family papers that will be auctioned in April.<\/p>\n<p>When he discovered that Richard Henry Green &#8220;may have been a pioneer African American student at Yale, I was a little skeptical,&#8221; Stattler says. &#8220;But it turned out to be true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>A &#8220;Mulatto&#8221; Clerk <\/b><\/p>\n<p>How Green&#8217;s race was viewed at Yale\u2014by the college, by his classmates, and by Green himself\u2014is unknown. Yale records don&#8217;t mention his race, and no images or physical descriptions of him have been found, says <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.yalealumnimagazine.com\/blog\/?p=14147\" target=\"_blank\">Judith Schiff<\/a>, the university&#8217;s chief research archivist and author of the <i>Yale Alumni Magazine<\/i>&#8216;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/yalealumnimagazine.com\/articles\/3806\" target=\"_blank\">Old Yale<\/a>&#8221; column.<\/p>\n<p>But the 1850 US census lists Richard Henry Green as a 17-year-old &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=451\" target=\"_blank\">mulatto<\/a>&#8221; clerk, living in New Haven with other &#8220;mulatto&#8221; family members.
