Comic pundit Stephen Colbert<\/a> argued Obamacare<\/a> and the Racial Justice Act<\/a> with U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield<\/a> while bashing North Carolina<\/a> barbecue in a playful segment spotlighting Wilson\u2019s congressional district.<\/p>\n

Butterfield, a Democrat representing the state\u2019s 1st District<\/a>, appeared on Comedy Central\u2019s “The Colbert Report<\/a>\u201d Monday night<\/a>, the latest installment in a series of interviews with House members. Colbert asked Butterfield whether Obamacare was a “great train wreck or greatest train wreck.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Let me tell you, when the history of this period is written, you will see that the Affordable Care Act<\/a> has been one of the most significant pieces of legislation that\u2019s ever been passed,\u201d Butterfield said.<\/p>\n

Colbert asked whether President Barack Obama<\/a> was lying when he told Americans that if they liked their health insurance plans, they could keep them…<\/p>\n

…Racial identity framed the opening of Colbert\u2019s segment, when he introduced Butterfield as a “prominent African-American congressman and civil rights leader,\u201d then appeared visibly surprised upon meeting Butterfield, who is light-skinned.<\/p>\n

“What\u2019s happening?\u201d Colbert asks someone off-camera. “Can someone tell me what\u2019s happening? Is this the guy? You said he was black.\u201d<\/p>\n

“I have been for 66 years,\u201d Butterfield said.<\/p>\n

“My mistake,\u201d replied Colbert. “I don\u2019t see race.\u201d<\/p>\n

“We come in all shades,\u201d said Butterfield. “How about that?\u201d<\/p>\n

“I really thought you were a white guy,\u201d Colbert mused. “My apologies.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Comedy Central<\/a> host teased Butterfield for supporting a plan to fund pre-kindergarten education with a tax increase of 94 cents on each pack of cigarettes, implying that the proposal would make smoking more expensive for preschoolers.<\/p>\n

“Those who smoke cigarettes can afford to pay a little bit more to help us invest in education,\u201d Butterfield said.<\/p>\n

“Even a 6-year-old?\u201d asked Colbert…<\/p>\n
