{"id":36190,"date":"2014-04-04T20:54:56","date_gmt":"2014-04-04T20:54:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=36190"},"modified":"2014-04-04T20:57:28","modified_gmt":"2014-04-04T20:57:28","slug":"bill-to-recognize-nansemonds-passes-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=36190","title":{"rendered":"Bill to recognize Nansemonds passes committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suffolknewsherald.com\/2014\/04\/02\/bill-to-recognize-nansemonds-passes-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Bill to recognize Nansemonds passes committee<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suffolknewsherald.com\" target=\"_blank\">Suffolk News-Herald<\/a><br \/>\nSuffolk, Virginia<br \/>\n2014-04-02<\/p>\n<p>A bill that would extend federal recognition to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nansemond\" target=\"_blank\">Nansemond Indian Tribe<\/a> and five others in Virginia passed the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Senate_Committee_on_Indian_Affairs\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Indian Affairs Committee<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The tribes, which also include the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chickahominy_people\" target=\"_blank\">Chickahominy<\/a>, Eastern Chickahominy, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mattaponi\" target=\"_blank\">Upper Mattaponi<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rappahannock_Tribe\" target=\"_blank\">Rappahannock<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monacan_(tribe)\" target=\"_blank\">Monacan<\/a>, are officially recognized by the state but not by the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just hope we can finally get there,\u201d Nansemond Indian Tribal Association Chief Barry Bass said on Thursday. \u201cIt\u2019s been a long, hard road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill has passed the Senate Indian Affairs Committee before, but a vote in the full Senate has been blocked by senators who believe the tribes should have to go through the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bureau_of_Indian_Affairs\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/a> as other tribes have done.<\/p>\n<p>But recognition through the bureau\u2019s administrative process requires documentation that current tribal members have a continuous line of descent from the historical tribes. That has been difficult, if not impossible, for Virginia Indians to prove, in part because of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Ashby_Plecker\" target=\"_blank\">Walter Plecker<\/a>, who was the registrar of Virginia\u2019s Bureau of Vital Statistics from 1912 to 1946.
