How Pew Got This Wrong<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theroot.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Root<\/a><br \/>\n2014-04-14<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theroot.com\/authors.jene_desmondharris.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jen\u00e9e Desmond-Harris<\/strong><\/a>, Senior Staff Writer and White House Correspondent<\/p>\n<p><em>Saying \u201cYes, Obama is mixed race\u201d is not the same as saying \u201cNo, he\u2019s not black.\u201d Racial Identity 101: You can be both.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Twenty-seven percent of Americans say <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">President Barack Obama<\/a> is black, while 52 percent say he&#8217;s mixed race.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s part of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/packages\/the-next-america\/\" target=\"_blank\">newly published Pew Research Center report<\/a> that has inspired jarring headlines like these about perceptions of the man commonly (formerly?) known as the first African-American president:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/the-fix\/wp\/2014\/04\/14\/is-barack-obama-black\/\" target=\"_blank\">Is Barack Obama &#8216;Black&#8217;? A Majority of Americans Say No<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/washington.cbslocal.com\/2014\/04\/14\/poll-majority-of-americans-say-obama-is-mixed-race-not-black\/\" target=\"_blank\">Poll: Majority of Americans Say Obama Is Mixed-Race, Not Black<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Washington Post<\/em> calls the data &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/the-fix\/wp\/2014\/04\/14\/is-barack-obama-black\/\" target=\"_blank\">fascinating<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s actually not. The only thing fascinating (read: frustrating) is why Pew would force people to choose between these two options. By setting up &#8220;black&#8221; and &#8220;mixed race&#8221; as mutually exclusive, as it appears to have done in the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/packages\/the-next-america\/\" target=\"_blank\">Obama: Black <em>or<\/em> Mixed Race<\/a>&#8221; (emphasis mine) portion of its poll, it offered Americans a misleading choice that doesn&#8217;t reflect their social reality, and certainly doesn&#8217;t tell us anything new about how they see their president.<\/p>\n<p>If participants were, in fact, forced to choose between the two options, knowing that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/03\/us\/politics\/03census.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">Obama self-identifies as black<\/a> and knowing, too, that he has a white parent and a black parent, it makes sense to assume that many people simply picked the most specific option: &#8220;mixed race.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That does not, by any stretch of the imagination, mean they say &#8220;no&#8221; to his being black&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theroot.com\/articles\/politics\/2014\/04\/americans_say_obama_s_not_black_no_they_don_t_pew.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Americans Say Obama\u2019s Not Black?
