P.<\/strong><br \/>\nDepartment of English<br \/>\n<em>Ramanujan College (University of Delhi), Kalkaji, New Delhi, India<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The depiction of the experience of a very fair-skinned person of some \u201ccoloured\u201d background who successfully <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">passes<\/a> into white society was a recurrent theme in early African American writings. In this paper an attempt is made to look at, and compare and contrast, two African American novels, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=22648\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man<\/em><\/a> (1912) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=2508\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Passing<\/em><\/a> (1929) which deal with the theme of passing, written by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Weldon_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\">James Weldon Johnson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nella_Larsen\" target=\"_blank\">Nella Larsen<\/a>, a Black man and a Black woman writer.
