{"id":36602,"date":"2014-06-03T22:46:23","date_gmt":"2014-06-03T22:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=36602"},"modified":"2014-06-03T22:46:23","modified_gmt":"2014-06-03T22:46:23","slug":"belle-romance-race-and-slavery-with-jane-austen-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=36602","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Belle&#8217;: Romance, Race And Slavery With Jane Austen Style"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/05\/29\/317025719\/belle-romance-race-and-slavery-with-jane-austen-style\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>&#8216;Belle&#8217;: Romance, Race And Slavery With Jane Austen Style<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\" target=\"_blank\">National Public Radio<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/tell-me-more\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tell Me More<\/a><br \/>\n2014-05-29<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/people\/5201175\/michel-martin\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Michel Martin<\/strong><\/a>, Host<\/p>\n<p>British actress <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gugu_Mbatha-Raw\" target=\"_blank\">Gugu Mbatha-Raw<\/a> was brought up on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Austen\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Austen<\/a> adaptations. &#8220;You know, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pride_and_Prejudice_(1995_TV_series)\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em><\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colin_Firth\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Firth<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jennifer_Ehle\" target=\"_blank\">Jennifer Ehle<\/a> was something I watched on a weekly basis with my mum at home in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxfordshire\" target=\"_blank\">Oxfordshire<\/a>,&#8221; she tells NPR&#8217;s Michel Martin.<\/p>\n<p>But as the biracial actress completed her training at Britain&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Academy_of_Dramatic_Art\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts<\/a>, she watched her peers win roles in &#8220;the <em>Downton Abbeys<\/em> of this world&#8221; and realized those period dramas weren&#8217;t calling her. It made Mbatha-Raw ask: &#8220;Why can&#8217;t I be in something like this?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now she is. Mbatha-Raw plays the title character in <em>Belle<\/em>, a film based on the true story of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dido_Elizabeth_Belle\" target=\"_blank\">Dido Elizabeth Belle<\/a>, the illegitimate daughter of a captain in the Royal Navy and an enslaved African woman.
