Before, I was <em>morena<\/em>. My color was practically a prank of the sun. I was a <em>morena<\/em> for the Catholic school teachers, classmates \u2013 who maybe didn\u2019t get as much sun \u2013 and for the family that never liked the subject. \u201cBut Grandma is not a descendant of slaves?\u201d, I kept asking. \u201cAnd of Indian and Portuguese as well,\u201d was the most that they responded on the origins of my black grandmother. I even thought it was beautiful to be so Brazilian.
