The year is 1977, the setting, a quiet all-American town in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio\" target=\"_blank\">Ohio<\/a>, where everyone knows one another and nothing like this has ever happened before.<\/p>\n<p>This is familiar territory, but Ng returns to it to spin an unfamiliar tale, with a very different kind of girl from the ones we\u2019ve been asked to follow before. If we know this story, we haven\u2019t seen it yet in American fiction, not until now.<\/p>\n<p>The missing girl is Lydia Lee, apple of her father\u2019s eye, her mother\u2019s favorite daughter.
