Raised by two <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ashkenazi_Jews\" target=\"_blank\">Ashkenazi Jewish<\/a> parents in a largely white, upstate New York town, Schwartz\u2019s complexion \u2014 darker than that of her relatives \u2014 had long been attributed to a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sicily\" target=\"_blank\">Sicilian<\/a> grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>Despite lingering questions, she believed the story. But when Schwartz enrolled at Georgetown University and the Black Student Alliance sent her a welcome letter based on a picture she submitted, Schwartz could no longer deny something was amiss.<\/p>\n<p>She confronted her mother, Peggy Schwartz, only to discover that her biological father was a black man named Rodney with whom she had had an affair.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of her family secret and Schwartz\u2019s coming to terms with her newly complex racial identity serves as the basis for \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.itvs.org\/films\/little-white-lie\" target=\"_blank\">Little White Lie<\/a>,\u201d a moving documentary that had its official world premiere at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival last Sunday following screenings in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cape_Cod\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Cod, Mass.<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philadelphia\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;While Schwartz the filmmaker has embraced her black identity, it has not been at the expense of the strong Jewish cultural identity she developed during her formative years.
