He was a well-known and respected poet and writer in his own land and, after a few months, he remarked to me, <strong>\u201cLarry, I didn&#8217;t realize I was a black until I came to this country!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The question of race, such a painful and rancorous illness in American society, has not played out the same in other countries with similar historical backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Neumann_Degler\" target=\"_blank\">Carl Degler<\/a> wrote a Pulitzer Prize-winning study titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=18918\" target=\"_blank\">Neither Black nor White: Slavery and Race Relations in Brazil and the United States<\/a>.\u201d His theme was summarized in the phrase the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=18898\" target=\"_blank\">mulatto escape hatch<\/a>.\u201d Degler compared the role of race in the histories of Brazil and the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Degler was curious: Why was Brazil thought to be a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=22166\" target=\"_blank\">racial democracy<\/a>\u201d of sorts, while the United States was fighting its way out of segregation? Both countries had had large African slave populations \u2014 Brazil&#8217;s much larger than America&#8217;s \u2014 both had emancipated the slaves in the 19th century, both were functioning republics and both were colonized by European settlers.
