{"id":37723,"date":"2014-10-15T01:24:40","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T01:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=37723"},"modified":"2014-10-15T14:07:41","modified_gmt":"2014-10-15T14:07:41","slug":"sands-of-time-american-beach-nears-80-year-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=37723","title":{"rendered":"SANDS OF TIME: American Beach nears 80-year anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/members.jacksonville.com\/community\/shorelines\/2014-10-13\/story\/sands-time-american-beach-nears-80-year-anniversary\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>SANDS OF TIME: American Beach nears 80-year anniversary<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jacksonville.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Florida Times-Union<\/a><br \/>\nJacksonville, Florida<br \/>\n2014-10-13<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alec Newell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The extended family of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zephaniah_Kingsley\" target=\"_blank\">Zephaniah Kingsley<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anna_Kingsley\" target=\"_blank\">Anna Jai<\/a>, and their descendants have been major players in shaping the history of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=First_Coast&amp;redirect=no\" target=\"_blank\">Northeast Florida<\/a> during three colonial periods, American territorial times, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florida\" target=\"_blank\">Florida<\/a> statehood and on into the 20th century.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Between <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_George_(Florida)\" target=\"_blank\">Lake George<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Marys_River_(Florida%E2%80%93Georgia)\" target=\"_blank\">St. Marys River<\/a>, the fingerprints they left seem to be everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Most of us are familiar with the story of how slave trader Zepheniah Kingsley bought a 13-year-old \u201cAfrican princess\u201d \u2014 Anna Madgigine Jai \u2014 in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuba\" target=\"_blank\">Cuba<\/a> and brought her back to his Laurel Grove Plantation in what is now <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orange_Park,_Florida\" target=\"_blank\">Orange Park<\/a>. The couple produced four children, and Zephaniah never wavered in his acknowledgement of Anna as his wife.<\/p>\n<p>Anna, later as a freed woman of color, would own her own slaves, plantation property, and live at various other family residences along the lower <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Johns_River\" target=\"_blank\">St. Johns River<\/a>. These properties included <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Mandarin_(Jacksonville)&amp;redirect=no\" target=\"_blank\">Mandarin<\/a> (later owned by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harriet_Beecher_Stowe\" target=\"_blank\">Harriet Beecher Stowe<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingsley_Plantation\" target=\"_blank\">Kingsley Plantation<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_George_Island_Cultural_State_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Ft. George Island<\/a>), Chesterfield (part of the Jacksonville University Campus), Floral Bluff (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neighborhoods_of_Jacksonville#Arlington\" target=\"_blank\">Arlington<\/a>), and Strawberry Plantation (Arlington Bluff), where she was buried.
