Is it the shade of your skin or the kink in your hair? Is it learned?<\/p>\n<p>These questions are explored in \u201cThe Box Marked Black: Tales from a Halfrican American growing up Mulatto. With sock puppets!\u201d Written and performed by <a href=\"http:\/\/damariswebb.com\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Damaris Webb<\/a> and directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cae-nyc.org\/teaching-artist\/Debra-Disbrow\" target=\"_blank\">Debra Disbrow<\/a>, the play is debuting at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.willamette.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Willamette University<\/a> Oct. 24-25.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn exploring the story of my blackness and unpacking my personal relationship to identity, race and culture, it quickly became clear that the best form for this exploration was as a solo piece,\u201d Webb says. \u201cHopefully, telling my story will create space for others to unpack and breathe around their own varied identities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With only <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_The_Jeffersons_supporting_characters#Jenny_Willis_Jefferson\" target=\"_blank\">Jenny Willis<\/a> from \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Jeffersons\" target=\"_blank\">The Jeffersons<\/a>\u201d as a guide, Webb\u2019s narrative uses direct storytelling, modern dance, song and puppetry to share the perspectives of both sides of her interracial family&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>For more information, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.willamette.edu\/news\/library\/2014\/10\/box_markedblack.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe Box Marked Black\u201d is coming to Willamette University Oct. 24-25 Willamette University News Salem, Oregon 2014-10-02 What does it mean to be black?
