Maryland\u2019s Never Elected A Black Governor, But Neither Have 47 Other States<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Before President Barack Obama<\/a> joined Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown<\/a> on stage at a get out the vote rally in Prince George\u2019s County<\/a> Sunday, Dr. Grainger Browning<\/a> of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Fort Washington<\/a> offered a prayer. Browning thanked God for Obama\u00a0 and he pointed to the historic nature of Brown\u2019s campaign: If elected, Brown would become not just Maryland\u2019s<\/a> first black governor, but only the third black governor ever elected in the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust as Doug Wilder<\/a> became governor, and just as Duval Patrick<\/a> became governor, we believe that on November he will become governor of this state of Maryland,\u201d Browning told the mostly African-American audience packed into a high school gym.<\/p>\n

But when Brown took to the stage alongside the nation\u2019s first African-American president, neither of them noted the potential of history being made. Throughout his campaign, Brown has not talked much about the precedent he\u2019d achieve.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll reference his biography, his father being from Jamaica<\/a>, but there isn\u2019t an overt mention of race,\u201d says Towson University political scientist John Bullock<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s more-so \u2018let\u2019s talk about education, let\u2019s talk about the environment or health care,\u2019 that sort of \u2018rising tides, all Marylanders,\u2019\u201d…<\/p>\n
