For long enough in his family\u2019s history, being black had made life difficult. But maybe in this circumstance, by the 1980s, it would be an advantage instead.<\/p>\n<p>But she thought differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI argued that I should mark \u2018other,\u2019 because that\u2019s what I was,\u201d Webb says in her solo theater piece \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/damariswebb.com\/the-box-marked-black\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Box Marked Black<\/a>,\u201d which opened last weekend at Ethos\/IFCC. \u201cNot that I was ashamed to be black. But I thought if I got into college for being black, when I showed up they\u2019d be disappointed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Depending on what you believe about race and classifications thereof, Webb is black. Or white. Or both. Or either.
