(Photo courtesy of Z\u00e9lie Asava)<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>DePaul University to host free gathering Nov. 13-15<\/em><\/p>\n<p>CHICAGO \u2014 Critical mixed race studies, a growing academic field that crosses national, disciplinary and racial boundaries, will be the focus of discussion by scholars, filmmakers and performers at an international conference Nov. 13-15 in Chicago. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/criticalmixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/cmrs-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Mixed Race<\/a>\u201d will be held at DePaul University\u2019s Lincoln Park Campus, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave. In addition to presentations of scholarly research, there will be live performances and film screenings, including the Chicago premiere of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/findingsamuellowe.com\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Finding Samuel Lowe: From Harlem to China<\/a>\u201d by director Paula Williams Madison.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 200 presenters from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan and Australia will participate in 45 panels during this third biennial conference, which was founded at DePaul in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to create a dynamic space for ongoing scholarly antiracist conversations, debates, and creative processes around multiraciality that also is open and inclusive for the general public, community organizations, and those involved in the arts,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/laurakina.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Kina<\/a>, cofounder of the conference and professor of art, media and design at DePaul University. Kina is coauthor of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=22829\" target=\"_blank\">War Baby\/Love Child: Mixed Race Asian American Art<\/a>\u201d and an artist whose solo exhibitions include \u201cBlue Hawai\u2019I\u201d and \u201cSugar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/las.depaul.edu\/departments\/latin-american-and-latino-studies\/faculty\/Pages\/camilla-fojas.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Camilla Fojas<\/a>, conference cofounder and professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at DePaul, will deliver the welcoming address with Kina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Critical_Mixed_Race_Studies\" target=\"_blank\">Critical mixed race studies<\/a> is comparative and interdisciplinary. It engages colonial and imperial histories, giving it a transnational and global focus,\u201d Fojas said. Her research focuses on transnational American media and cultural studies in a comparative imperial context.
