The ‘are you black enough?’ question is perilously close to the racist one-drop rule<\/a> of yore\u2014whether called by blacks or whites.<\/em><\/p>\n

Whether Seattle Seahawks<\/a> quarterback Russell Wilson<\/a> is \u201cblack enough<\/a>\u201d is beside the point. The real issue is why we are still talking about racial authenticity at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy feeling on this\u2014and it\u2019s backed up by several interviews with Seahawks players\u2014is that some of the black players think Wilson isn’t black enough,\u201d Mike Freeman writes at Bleacher Report<\/em><\/a>, reporting on tensions between just-traded teammate Percy Harvin<\/a> and Wilson, including a locker room reportedly divided into pro\/con camps.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an issue that extends outside of football, into African-American society\u2014though it’s gotten better recently,\u201d Freeman writes. \u201cWell-spoken blacks are seen by some other blacks as not completely black. Some of this is at play.\u201d<\/p>\n
