{"id":38493,"date":"2014-11-25T17:16:40","date_gmt":"2014-11-25T17:16:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=38493"},"modified":"2014-11-25T22:23:15","modified_gmt":"2014-11-25T22:23:15","slug":"proposal-for-nyc-forms-option-to-identify-as-multiracial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=38493","title":{"rendered":"Proposal for NYC Forms: Option to Identify as Multiracial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/articles\/proposal-for-nyc-forms-option-to-identify-as-multiracial-1416859508\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Proposal for NYC Forms: Option to Identify as Multiracial<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a><br \/>\n2014-11-24<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maragay\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mara Gay<\/strong><\/a>, City Hall Reporter<\/p>\n<p><em>Legislation Being Introduced in City Council on Tuesday<\/em><\/p>\n<p>New Yorkers would be able to identify as more than one race on city documents under <a href=\"http:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=2073847&amp;GUID=896A1229-34E6-42AE-8670-507039ECCC44\" target=\"_blank\">legislation set to be introduced<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/html\/home\/home.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">City Council<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just wanted to bring <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\">New York City<\/a> into the 21st century,\u201d said Councilwoman <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margaret_Chin\" target=\"_blank\">Margaret Chin<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manhattan\" target=\"_blank\">Manhattan<\/a> Democrat and the lead sponsor of the measure. \u201cThis will allow New Yorkers to identify their heritage and be proud of it. They shouldn\u2019t have to only check one box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city has the highest multiracial population in the country, with 325,901 people identifying as more than one race on the 2010 U.S. Census.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, city forms that ask for information about race or ethnicity have five options: \u201cwhite, not of Hispanic origin\u201d; \u201cblack, not of Hispanic origin\u201d; \u201cHispanic\u201d; \u201cAsian or Pacific Islander\u201d; and \u201cAmerican Indian or Alaskan Native.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislation could mean changes for dozens of city forms. Complaint forms with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/cchr\/html\/home\/home.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">New York City Commission on Human Rights<\/a> would be changed under the bill, for example, as would applications at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/sbs\/html\/home\/home.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Small Business Services<\/a> and at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/nycha\/html\/home\/home.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">New York City Housing Authority<\/a>.
