This article tracks the trajectory of this idea from the 1880s, when it was first introduced by the liberal Austrian anthropologist and archaeologist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Felix_von_Luschan\" target=\"_blank\">Felix von Luschan<\/a>, through the works of American Jewish physician <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurice_Fishberg\" target=\"_blank\">Maurice Fishberg<\/a> and German Jewish linguist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sigmund_Feist\" target=\"_blank\">Sigmund Feist<\/a>, to its appropriation and inversion by the prominent <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazism\" target=\"_blank\">Nazi<\/a> theoretician of race <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hans_F._K._G%C3%BCnther\" target=\"_blank\">Hans F. K. G\u00fcnther<\/a> in the 1920s.
