{"id":38845,"date":"2014-12-14T01:53:50","date_gmt":"2014-12-14T01:53:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=38845"},"modified":"2014-12-14T01:53:50","modified_gmt":"2014-12-14T01:53:50","slug":"pope-francis-prays-for-new-ways-of-development-in-latin-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=38845","title":{"rendered":"Pope Francis Prays for New Ways of Development in Latin America."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/content\/dispatches\/pope-francis-prays-new-ways-development-latin-america\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Pope Francis Prays for New Ways of Development in Latin America.<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\" target=\"_blank\">America: The National Catholic Review<\/a><br \/>\n2014-12-12<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/node\/159136\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Gerard O&#8217;Connell<\/strong><\/a>, Associate Editor\/Vatican Correspondent<\/p>\n<p>The enchanting music and song of the Missa Criolla resounded through <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Peter%27s_Basilica\" target=\"_blank\">St Peter\u2019s Basilica<\/a> on the evening of December 12 as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_Francis\" target=\"_blank\">Francis<\/a>, the first Latin American pope, celebrated mass on the feast of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Our_Lady_of_Guadalupe\" target=\"_blank\">Our Lady of Guadalupe<\/a> and expressed the hope that the continent where he was born would distinguish itself in the future by \u201cnew ways of development\u201d marked by its care for the poor, the exploited, the persecuted and its work for justice and peace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, with gratitude and joy, the peoples and nations of our great Latin American homeland commemorate the feast of their \u201cpatron\u201d, Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose devotion extends from Alaska to Patagonia\u201d, Francis, in his homily, told a congregation of thousands of Latin Americans in the basilica, including ambassadors, and thousands of priests, nuns, religious and lay people from all countries of this continent, and a far greater audience following on TV in many countries..<\/p>\n<p>The two-hour celebration began with the recitation of the Guadeloupian Rosary, presided over by the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norberto_Rivera_Carrera\" target=\"_blank\">cardinal archbishop of Mexico City, Norberto Rivera Carrera<\/a>, and concluded with the rousing popular hymn to Our Lady of Guadalupe known as \u201cLa Guadalupana\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately after the rosary, one could sense a great sense of Latin American pride fill the basilica as the flags of the different countries were carried in parade through the central aisle and placed at the side of the high altar&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;In his homily, Pope Francis recalled that when Our Lady appeared to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juan_Diego\" target=\"_blank\">Saint Juan Diego<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tepeyac\" target=\"_blank\">Tepeyac Hill<\/a> (on the outskirts of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico City<\/a>), December 1531, she introduced herself as the \u201cever perfect <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_(mother_of_Jesus)\" target=\"_blank\">Holy Virgin Mary<\/a>, Mother of the True God\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huei_tlamahui%C3%A7oltica\" target=\"_blank\">Nican Mopohua<\/a>)\u201d. <strong>Then, he said, \u201cshe tenderly hastened to embrace the new people of the Americas at the dramatic moment they came into being\u201d and \u201cassumed within herself the cultural and religious symbolism of the native people, announcing her Son and giving Him to the new and suffering people of mixed race.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He recalled how <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesus\" target=\"_blank\">Jesus, the Son of Mary<\/a>, \u201creveals himself from the origins of this new peoples\u2019 history, as the \u2018true God who gives us Life,\u2019 as the good news of filial dignity of all the inhabitants of America.\u201d As a result of this, Francis said that in this continent \u201cno longer is anyone a servant, but we are all children of the same Father, brothers and sisters together.\u201d And, he added, \u201cThe Holy Mother of God not only visited these people, but she chose to remain with them.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/content\/dispatches\/pope-francis-prays-new-ways-development-latin-america\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pope Francis Prays for New Ways of Development in Latin America.
