Griffith<\/a> were fighting over a film that dramatized the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction_era_(United_States)\" target=\"_blank\">Reconstruction<\/a> in a post-<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Confederate_States_of_America\" target=\"_blank\">Confederate<\/a> South. Griffith\u2019s film, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Birth_of_a_Nation\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Birth of a Nation<\/em><\/a>, included actors in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blackface\" target=\"_blank\">blackface<\/a>, heroic portraits of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ku_Klux_Klan\" target=\"_blank\">Knights of the Ku Klux Klan<\/a>, and a depiction of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assassination_of_Abraham_Lincoln\" target=\"_blank\">Lincoln\u2019s assassination<\/a>. Freed slaves were portrayed as villainous, vengeful, slovenly, and dangerous to the sanctity of American values. It was tremendously successful, eventually seen by 25 million Americans. But violent protests\u00a0against the film flared up across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Monroe Trotter\u2019s titanic crusade to have the film censored became a blueprint for dissent during the 1950s and 1960s.
