{"id":39327,"date":"2015-01-08T16:14:44","date_gmt":"2015-01-08T16:14:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=39327"},"modified":"2015-01-08T18:16:40","modified_gmt":"2015-01-08T18:16:40","slug":"veterans-to-remember-parker-david-robbins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=39327","title":{"rendered":"Veterans to Remember: Parker David Robbins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/werehistory.org\/veterans-to-remember-2\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Veterans to Remember: Parker David Robbins<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/werehistory.org\" target=\"_blank\">We&#8217;re History<\/a><br \/>\n2014-11-10<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitchburgstate.edu\/faculty-profiles\/benjamin-railton-phd-associate-professor-english-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ben Railton<\/strong><\/a>, Associate Professor of English and Coordinator of American Studies<br \/>\n<em>Fitchburg State University, Fitchburg, Massachusetts<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thanks principally to the critical and popular success of the film <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glory_(1989_film)\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Glory<\/em><\/a> (1989), our collective memory of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War<\/a> includes African American soldiers (known in their era as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/education\/history\/usct\/usct-united-states-colored.html\" target=\"_blank\">United States Colored Troops<\/a>). But while we might have a sense of those soldiers\u2019 general participation in the war, few individual African American soldiers or officers have made it into our Civil War narratives \u2013 which also, and perhaps even more significantly, means that we don\u2019t tend to think about African American Civil War veterans and their experiences and identities beyond the war. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcarolinahistory.org\/encyclopedia\/678\/entry\/\" target=\"_blank\">Parker David Robbins<\/a> (1834-1917) is a good candidate to correct those trends.<\/p>\n<p>Robbins doesn\u2019t fit either of the two identities that historians have most consistently linked to the USCT: he was neither an ex-slave nor a free Northern African American. Instead, he was born free in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Carolina\" target=\"_blank\">North Carolina<\/a>, into a mixed-race farming family that included Native American as well as European and African American heritages. By the time the war started, Robbins had begun developing his own North Carolina family and legacy. He was married and running a 100-acre farm on which he paid <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Confederate_States_of_America\" target=\"_blank\">Confederate<\/a> taxes.
