That\u2019s because interracial marriages weren\u2019t legalized in the U.S. until 1967.<\/p>\n<p>Interracial relationships are more common than ever. In 1960, just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/population\/socdemo\/race\/interractab1.txt\" target=\"_blank\">0.4% of marriages were interracial<\/a>. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blogs\/the-avenue\/posts\/2014\/12\/18-multiracial-marriage-frey\" target=\"_blank\">recent study<\/a> found that number had increased to 15% for newlyweds.<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere is the growing acceptance and practice of multiracial relationships more common <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/2010\/02\/01\/almost-all-millennials-accept-interracial-dating-and-marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\">than on college campuses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYounger people aren\u2019t tied down with all the old racial stereotypes,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ericachitochilds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Erica Chito-Childs<\/a>, a sociology professor at Hunter College in New York City and author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=6759\" target=\"_blank\">two books on interracial marriage<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019re more likely to have grown up with a favorite musical entertainer [who] is African-American or of a different race. They\u2019ve grown up watching shows or cartoon shows that are multiracial. And depending on where they live, they\u2019ve probably gone to school with friends that are of a different race.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;A survey by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2012\/02\/16\/chapter-4-public-attitudes-on-intermarriage\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pew Research Center<\/a> showed that 43% of all Americans believe the rise in intermarriages has been a good thing. However, among 18- to 29-year-olds, a majority 61% approve of interracial marriage and 93% favor multiracial dating.
