Knapp Professor of American History<br \/>\n<em>Washington College, Chestertown, Maryland<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Depictions of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=7657\" target=\"_blank\"><em>pla\u00e7age<\/em><\/a>, a type of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concubinage\" target=\"_blank\">concubinage<\/a> found in pre-<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\">New Orleans<\/a>, have tended toward the romantic. A group of scholars have shown recently that, contrary to popular perception, many <em>pla\u00e7age<\/em> unions were no different from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Common-law_marriage\" target=\"_blank\">common-law marriages<\/a>. This article takes a case-study approach to examine one such relationship in detail \u2013 one that was the subject of a legal challenge involving the fortune of perhaps the wealthiest free black woman in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\">Louisiana<\/a>. I apply <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arielagross.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ariela J.
