We will examine cultural phenomena such as blackface minstrel shows, stories of racial &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">passing<\/a>,&#8221; and a variety of texts (plays, fiction, poetry, and non-fiction) that depict the complex relationship between race and identity in American culture. Authors will include <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Jefferson\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Jefferson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Twain\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Twain<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Wells_Brown\" target=\"_blank\">William Wells Brown<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herman_Melville\" target=\"_blank\">Herman Melville<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_W._Chesnutt\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Chesnutt<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Weldon_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\">James Weldon Johnson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nella_Larsen\" target=\"_blank\">Nella Larsen<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zitkala-Sa\" target=\"_blank\">Zitkala-Sa<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sui_Sin_Far\" target=\"_blank\">Sui Sin Far<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winnifred_Eaton\" target=\"_blank\">Onoto Watanna<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Henry_Hwang\" target=\"_blank\">David Henry Hwang<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suzan-Lori_Parks\" target=\"_blank\">Suzan Lori-Parks<\/a>.
