{"id":39571,"date":"2015-01-20T18:51:08","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T18:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=39571"},"modified":"2015-01-20T18:51:08","modified_gmt":"2015-01-20T18:51:08","slug":"a-multiethnic-movement-emerges-in-guyana-to-counter-politics-as-usual","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=39571","title":{"rendered":"A Multiethnic Movement Emerges in Guyana to Counter Politics-as-Usual"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/01\/18\/world\/a-multiethnic-movement-emerges-in-guyana-to-counter-politics-as-usual.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>A Multiethnic Movement Emerges in Guyana to Counter Politics-as-Usual<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a><br \/>\n2015-01-17<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jammastergirish\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Girish Gupta<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georgetown,_Guyana\" target=\"_blank\">GEORGETOWN, Guyana<\/a> \u2014 Swaying to the rhythms of Afro-Guyanese reggae, the protesters, descendants of African slaves and indentured laborers from India, gathered on the streets of Georgetown in a show of unity against the country\u2019s president.<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, a gathering of members of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guyana\" target=\"_blank\">Guyana\u2019s<\/a> two main ethnic groups, which have long been at opposite ends of the country\u2019s political divide, would have been unusual.<\/p>\n<p>But the protest in November, after <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Ramotar\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Ramotar<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/12\/world\/americas\/guyana-legislature-is-suspended.html\" target=\"_blank\">suspended Parliament<\/a> in order to fend off a no-confidence motion, reflected an important change taking place in this tiny English-speaking country of just 740,000 people perched on the shoulder of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_America\" target=\"_blank\">South America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Politics in Guyana have long been delineated by race.
