Love<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jewishexponent.com\/opinion\/2015\/01\/grappling-with-todays-realities-from-a-black-jewish-perspective\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jewishexponent.com\/sites\/default\/files\/article\/main_image\/oped-love.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>The author with his wife, Sarah Katz, and son, Micah.<\/small><\/p>\n<p>As an African-American who is a member of the Jewish community by choice \u2014 and is also raising a Jewish child of color \u2014 I have a unique experience. And yet, I view my experience as part of the future direction of the diaspora. My link to Judaism involves multiple identities, a passion for social justice and a commitment to nonviolence.<\/p>\n<p>I had my first experiences with the Jewish community while growing up in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laurelton,_Queens\" target=\"_blank\">Laurelton<\/a> section of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queens\" target=\"_blank\">Queens, N.Y.<\/a>, in the 1970s and &#8217;80s. The community had several synagogues, which I occasionally visited with my friends. In addition, the house in which I was raised had a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mezuzah\" target=\"_blank\">mezuzah<\/a> in the front door, left from the previous family who had lived there \u2014 a foretelling of what was to come, perhaps?<\/p>\n<p>At Harvard College, I studied the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Holocaust\" target=\"_blank\">Holocaust<\/a> and genocide with Erich Goldhagen, a Holocaust survivor. Later at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, under the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.upenn.edu\/cf\/faculty\/hreicher\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Reicher<\/a>, I researched the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nuremberg_Laws\" target=\"_blank\">Nuremberg Laws<\/a> and their connection to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=4781\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Crow <\/a>segregation laws in the American South.<\/p>\n<p>When I married my wife, Sarah Katz, we became members of <a href=\"https:\/\/mishkan.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mishkan Shalom<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roxborough,_Philadelphia\" target=\"_blank\">Roxborough<\/a>, marking the beginning of my introduction into the Jewish community. Mishkan is home because of its progressive social values. It has provided an open and welcoming environment for us \u2014 particularly an \u201coutsider\u201d such as me \u2014 and interracial and interfaith families.
