Questions have been raised about the race, gender, age and religiosity of prospective jurors; about the effect of holding the trial in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston\" target=\"_blank\">Boston<\/a>; and about the legal requirement that the jurors be open to the possibility of sentencing the defendant to death.<\/p>\n<p>But recent research of ours suggests that another, largely overlooked factor may also play an important role in the trial: whether the jurors perceive Mr. Tsarnaev as white.<\/p>\n<p>No sooner did the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federal_Bureau_of_Investigation\" target=\"_blank\">F.B.I.<\/a> release photographs of Mr. Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan, three days after the bombings, than questions arose about the racial identity of the suspects. (\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2013\/04\/22\/are_the_tsarnaev_brothers_white\/\" target=\"_blank\">Are the Tsarnaev Brothers White?<\/a>\u201d ran a headline in <em>Salon<\/em>.)
