{"id":39759,"date":"2015-01-31T01:48:47","date_gmt":"2015-01-31T01:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=39759"},"modified":"2015-01-31T01:48:47","modified_gmt":"2015-01-31T01:48:47","slug":"dear-hollywood-lets-stop-making-movies-like-black-or-white","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=39759","title":{"rendered":"Dear Hollywood: Let&#8217;s Stop Making Movies Like &#8220;Black or White&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rebeccatheodore\/2015\/01\/30\/black-or-white-movie-review-race\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Dear Hollywood: Let&#8217;s Stop Making Movies Like &#8220;Black or White&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\" target=\"_blank\">Forbes<\/a><br \/>\n2015-01-30<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rebeccatheodore\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rebecca Theodore<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Halfway through the family drama \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2883434\" target=\"_blank\">Black Or White<\/a>,\u201d Jeremiah Jeffers (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthony_Mackie\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Mackie<\/a>) an Ivy-League educated lawyer, chastises his drug addict nephew Reggie (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2428245\" target=\"_blank\">Andre Holland<\/a>) in the midst of helping him regain custody of his daughter by asking, \u201cWhy do you have to be such a stereotype?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A question I repeatedly asked myself as I had to suffer through yet another one of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinema_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood\u2019s<\/a> latest \u201cWhite Is Right\u201d films about racial relations. In \u201cBlack or White\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kevin_Costner\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Costner<\/a> stars as Elliot Anderson, a successful lawyer who is left to raise his biracial granddaughter Eloise, when his wife dies unexpectedly. Elliot\u2019s life becomes further complicated with an escalating drinking problem and a fight for Eloise from her absentee father and paternal grandmother (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Octavia_Spencer\" target=\"_blank\">Octavia Spencer<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Black or White\u201d is the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iggy_Azalea\" target=\"_blank\">Iggy Azalea<\/a> of race films \u2013 it operates under the guise of being progressive and furthering the \u201cconversation\u201d about race, but only serves to exalt Whiteness by marginalizing Blackness.
